Muhozan Kozenji (Peakless Mountain, Shoreless River) temple was founded in 1983 by the current Abbot, Robert Livingston Roshi, to provide instruction in true Zen practice for New Orleans and the region. The temple has maintained a sitting and retreat schedule since its initial opening in a small uptown home, relocating several times before settling into the four story Camp St facility in 1991.
The temple grounds and schedule are maintained by residents and by volunteers from the sangha (practice group), and daily samu includes gardening, maintenance, sewing, cleaning, and preparation of meals. The temple is supported by the American Zen Association, a 501c3 non-profit organization that assists affiliated Zen dojos throughout the region.
