For visitors new to Zen who wish to practice at the New Orleans Zen Temple, a beginner's orientation is offered on scheduled Sundays. Beginner sessions usually occur once per month- please review the schedule for upcoming dates.
A beginner session includes instruction on practice, Sunday Zazen with the sangha, and lunch after zazen, as well as a copy of a book from the Deshimaru Zen lineage. For those wishing to attend practice, please observe the following guidelines:
- A donation of $25 is expected and due by 6pm the Thursday before the scheduled date. Donation may be made by check, cash, or money order and sent to the dojo address, or dropped off in the mail slot. Please download the Orientation Registration form and submit this with your payment.
- Plan to come to the temple by 7:45am on the scheduled date for the introduction to begin at 8:00am sharp. Latecomers will be asked to return at the following month’s introduction.
- The introduction will include instruction on the posture of Zazen and the etiquette in the Dojo (“place of the Way”). Zazen with ceremony will begin thereafter at 10:00am sharp.
- Lunch will begin after zazen and end by 1pm. Participants should plan to stay for lesson, Zazen, and lunch.
Please contact the temple with any questions you may have.
Zazen is not an easy practice. Especially in the beginning, it requires
effort and determination. But it is not difficult either. Through patient,
daily repetition, anyone can practice Zen.
